A kick stop is a clamp that sits over the animal's loin, just in front of the hip, and applies steady pressure across the back. That pressure discourages a cow from lifting and swinging a hind foot. Nothing goes around a leg, so it is quick to apply from a safe position and there is nothing to unbuckle when she is done. Where it fits is short jobs on animals that are otherwise reasonable: milking a fresh or sore cow, treating a quarter, a quick examination at the back end. It is faster to put on than a hobble and there is no risk of a leg getting tangled. Where it does not fit is anything long or anything where a kick would badly hurt you. It works by discouraging, not by physically preventing, and a cow that is determined enough or frightened enough will kick anyway. It also relies on being adjusted to that animal: too loose and she ignores it, too tight and you are causing pain rather than applying pressure, which is not acceptable and does not work any better. Use it for minutes, not for stretches, and take it off as soon as the job is done. Never leave an animal in one unattended.
