This is the cheap, light, quick option. Hook and loop straps close around both hind legs above the hocks with a 17 inch span, and the whole thing goes on in seconds with no buckles, no chain and nothing to pinch a finger in. For a lot of cows that is enough. Most animals stop trying to kick once they feel their legs linked, and they never test the strap. If your problem is a cow that lifts a foot when you touch a quarter rather than one that genuinely means it, this does the job at a fraction of the cost of a locking hobble. Be honest about the limits. Hook and loop is not a lock. A determined cow will pull it apart, and manure, hair and straw packed into the hooks will halve its holding power. Seventeen inches also suits smaller cows and heifers better than big mature animals. If you have a cow that has already beaten a hobble, buy the double-lock version and do not experiment. Because it is light and cheap, it is worth having a couple: one in the parlour, one in the calving pen. Pick the hooks clean regularly, because that is what wears out first. Do not leave an animal hobbled unattended, do not walk her far in it, and never rely on it for a job where a kick would seriously hurt you.
