Before you can diagnose anything in a foot you have to see the foot, and that means getting the packed dirt, gravel, snow and manure out of it. That is the entire job of this tool, and it does it for less than the price of a coffee. The pick is steel with a vinyl-dipped handle, and the dip is there for grip more than comfort: wet hands, cold hands, gloved hands. The point is stout enough to lever a stone out of a crevice without bending and blunt enough that it is not going to punch through a sole if the animal shifts on you. Colours are assorted and we ship what is in the bin. That turns out to be useful. Bright handles are easier to find in bedding, and if several people pick feet around your place, colour is how each of them keeps track of their own. Work heel to toe so you are pushing debris out rather than further in, and on horses pay attention to the collateral grooves and the point of the frog. If you clear a foot and find heat, a foul smell, separation in the white line, or a soft spot that gives under the pick, that is the point where a pick stops being the right tool. Rinse it, dry it, and expect to lose it long before it wears out.
