A Frick speculum is a smooth stainless tube that goes into the mouth and down the back of the throat, giving you a straight protected path for a stomach tube, a magnet or a bolus. Cattle chew, and a speculum is what stops a tube being crushed and stops a bolus gun being bitten. It also keeps the route straight, which is the part that matters most. Twenty inches is the standard length for grown cattle. It gets past the molars and into the top of the oesophagus so that whatever you pass through it goes into the right place instead of curling back into the mouth. The important caution is the same one every time you put anything down an animal's throat. The oesophagus and the trachea are next to each other, and fluid delivered into the trachea kills. Before anything goes down a tube, confirm placement: feel the tube in the oesophagus alongside the trachea on the left of the neck, smell for rumen gas, and stop if the animal is coughing or fighting it. If you have not been shown how to do this, have your veterinarian walk you through it once on a healthy animal before you do it on a sick one. The head must be restrained and held level, not stretched up. Wash the speculum after use, dry it, and check the ends for burrs that could scrape the throat.
