Foot rot is an infection between the claws, and treatment is only as good as your access to it. These shears are for making that access: paring the overgrown and undermined horn back off the interdigital space so you can see the lesion, clean it, and let it drain. The serrated edge is the reason to pick these over a smooth blade. Hoof horn is slick, especially wet, and a plain edge skates. The serrations bite and hold where you set them, so the cut goes where you aimed instead of sliding off into the sole. The double-bow handles give you two-handed leverage without a long swing, which matters when you are working under a chute-side foot. Get the foot restrained properly first: a trimming crate, a tilt table, or a well-set rope on a squeeze, not a hand on the pastern and hope. Take small bites. You are removing loose and diseased horn, not reshaping the claw. Wash and dry them between animals and keep them out of the same bucket as everything else, because foot rot spreads. Oil the pivot occasionally and touch up the serrations with a fine file rather than a grinder. Antibiotic treatment and when to involve your veterinarian belong to your herd health protocol.
