The small size at five sixteenths, for young calves and smaller stock where a half inch notch takes more ear than you want to remove. On a small ear a medium notcher does not leave enough margin between notches to keep a system readable. Stainless on a cutting tool is worth the difference over aluminium. It holds an edge through a run and takes repeated disinfection without corroding, which aluminium does not manage as well over years of use. V-type cuts a wedge, which goes through with less force than a rounded notch and matches how most notching charts are laid out. Sharpness is not optional. A dull notcher crushes tissue instead of cutting it, which hurts, bleeds and heals into something nobody can read. Disinfect between animals. Work your system out in advance, because notching is permanent, and it is management identification rather than a replacement for an approved CCIA tag.
