Details
The V-type cuts a wedge. It goes through an ear with less force than a U does, which is a real advantage when you are notching a lot of calves in a day, and the wedge is what most established notching charts are drawn around. Stainless costs more than aluminium and earns it on a cutting tool. It takes a proper edge, keeps it through a run of animals, and stands up to repeated disinfection without pitting. Half inch medium is the general purpose size for cattle. The trade off against a U notch is legibility over time. A narrow V can partially close as the ear grows, so cut it cleanly and to full depth rather than nibbling at it. Keep the blades sharp, disinfect between animals, and settle your notch system before you start rather than halfway through the calves. Notches are management identification and do not replace an approved CCIA tag.
