Five sixteenths, the small notch, in aluminium. Twenty five dollars is roughly the entry price for permanent identification, and for a small operation notching a handful of calves each spring it is entirely adequate. The small size is right for young calves and smaller stock. A half inch notch in a small ear takes more tissue than you need and leaves too little margin between notches to keep a system legible. Aluminium is light and inexpensive and gives up edge retention in exchange. It will not stay sharp through hundreds of animals the way stainless does, but it will last many years of low volume use without complaint. Sharp and clean are the two things that matter. A dull notcher crushes rather than cuts, which hurts the calf more, bleeds more and heals into an unreadable smear. Disinfect between animals. Work out your notching system on paper first, because it is permanent, and keep in mind it is management identification and not a substitute for an approved CCIA tag.
