Half inch V is the size most notching systems assume, and aluminium is the version of the tool most operations actually buy. At thirty dollars it does the job without the outlay of stainless. The V cuts a wedge, which goes through an ear with less force than a rounded notch. Over a long day of calves that difference turns up in your hands. Aluminium is lighter and cheaper and gives up edge retention in return. For a few dozen calves a year that is irrelevant. For an operation notching every calf, the stainless version is the better long term buy and it is only ten dollars more. Keep the blades sharp, disinfect between animals, and cut cleanly to full depth in one motion. A half done notch heals into something unreadable, which defeats the entire purpose. Decide your notch system before you start on the calves, and remember notches are management identification rather than a replacement for an approved CCIA tag.
