Thirteen sixteenths is the large notch, and the reason to go big is legibility at a distance. A notch you can read from outside the pen saves running animals through a chute just to identify them, and on mature stock a small notch is close to useless from ten feet away. Aluminium keeps the weight and the price down. On a tool you squeeze several hundred times in a day, lighter is not a trivial consideration, and at thirty seven dollars it is an easier purchase than stainless. The trade off is durability. Aluminium does not hold an edge as long as stainless and does not take years of disinfection as gracefully. Notch a handful of calves a year and it will outlast your interest in the subject. Notch hundreds and buy stainless instead. Keep it sharp, disinfect between animals, and cut to full depth in one motion rather than working at it. Notching is permanent identification and it is not a substitute for an approved CCIA tag.
