A U-type notcher cuts a rounded notch rather than a wedge. The practical difference shows up years later in how it reads: a U tends to stay open and legible, where a narrow V can close up as the ear grows and turn into a guess. Stainless is the reason for the price over aluminium. It takes an edge, holds it through a run, and can be disinfected repeatedly without corroding, which matters on a tool that cuts tissue on every animal in a group. Half inch is the medium size and suits most cattle notching systems. Keep it sharp and keep it clean. A dull notcher crushes rather than cuts, which hurts more, bleeds more and heals into an unreadable mess. Disinfect between animals. Notching is permanent, so work your system out on paper before you start putting it on calves, and bear in mind it is management identification rather than a substitute for an approved CCIA tag.
