This is the heavy-duty end of anti-kick hobbles. Twenty-one inches between the cuffs sizes it for mature cows, and the double lock is the point of it: two independent catches, so a cow that has learned to shake or stomp a single-latch hobble off has nothing to work against. If you have never had a hobble come loose, this may look like more money than the job needs. If you have had one let go on you while you were underneath, it does not. Restraint that fails at the wrong moment is worse than no restraint, because you were relying on it. Like any hobble, it links the hind legs to stop a forward kick while leaving the animal standing on all four feet. Set it so she can stand at her natural width. Tight is not safer; tight is how a cow goes down. The trade-off against a light hook-and-loop hobble is weight and time. This takes longer to put on and take off and is more to carry, so most places that own both use the light one on quiet cows and this one on the handful that need it. Never leave an animal unattended in a hobble and never move her far. Check both locks engage properly before you trust it, and keep the mechanism clean and oiled so it keeps doing that.
