Linked that way a cow cannot bring a foot forward to kick, but she can still stand square and balanced and put her weight where she needs it, which is what separates this from tying a leg up. The 12 to 21 inch range covers heifers through mature cows. Adjust it so she can stand at her natural leg width, not tighter. A cufflink set too short makes an animal unstable and more likely to go down, which is exactly the outcome you were trying to avoid. It comes into its own for the jobs at the back end: treating a quarter, milking a fresh cow that has opinions, dressing a wound below the hock, taking a temperature on an animal that will not tolerate it. It goes on and off far faster than rope and does not leave her standing on three legs. Red and blue are identical apart from colour, and the choice is about visibility and about telling your gear apart from somebody else's. Do not leave her in it unattended, and do not walk her any distance while she is linked.
