One halter that covers a cow and a saddle horse is a practical thing to have hanging by the door. The crown adjusts, the nose is flat nylon web, and the hardware is sized for animals that pull, so it does the job whether you are leading a quiet mare or holding a heifer's head for a needle. Black is the colour people pick when the halter is going to be seen: sale day, a 4-H ring, the photograph for the ad. It also hides manure and dust longer than the light colours do, which is either a selling point or a warning depending on how you look at it. The flip side is that a black halter left on a fence in a black-dirt corral is gone, so hang it somewhere deliberate. Nylon web does not rot and does not stiffen the way leather does when it gets soaked and dries hard. It also does not break. That is worth thinking about, because a halter that will not let go is exactly what you want in your hand and exactly what you do not want left on an unattended animal in a pen with things to catch on. Check the stitching at the throat and around the nose ring every so often, since that is where the load concentrates. Wash it in a bucket rather than a machine and let it dry out of the sun.
