A nose flap works on a simple principle. The calf grazes and drinks completely normally, but the flap gets in the way when it tries to suck. It stays with its mother through the process, and that is what makes this easier on both of them than pulling them apart outright. Two stage weaning is why people use these. The flap goes in for several days so the calf loses the habit while it still has the comfort of the cow, then you separate. Calves handled this way generally bawl less, walk less and hold condition better than calves pulled cold. Medium is the mid size. Fit is most of whether this works: too small pinches, too large falls out in the bush, and either way you are buying them again. Look at the calves daily while flaps are in. They work loose, and a flap that has shifted is either doing nothing or rubbing the nose raw.
