Cattle Boss Bühner needle 8 inch
Eight-inch Bühner needle for placing a deep vulvar retention suture, sized for ewes, does and smaller heifers.
Details
A Bühner needle is a long, blunt, eyed needle used to run heavy tape subcutaneously around the vulva as a retention suture after a vaginal prolapse has been replaced. The blunt tip is deliberate: it pushes through tissue planes rather than cutting, so it goes where you guide it and not into something you did not intend. Eight inches is the small-stock and smaller-heifer length. On ewes and does the shorter shaft is easier to control and easier to keep in the right plane, and there is simply less distance to cover. Buy the twelve-inch instead if your work is mature beef cows. Be clear about what this tool is. Replacing a prolapse and placing a Bühner suture is a veterinary procedure. It needs the prolapse cleaned and reduced first, it needs epidural anaesthesia to be done humanely and to stop straining, and it needs a plan for when the suture comes out before lambing or calving. If you have not been shown how, phone your veterinarian rather than working it out on a straining animal. Prolapse also tends to recur and has culling implications worth discussing. Clean and sterilise the needle before and after use, and check the eye for burrs that would fray the tape.
