Anyone who has tried to cut a wrap off a fidgeting animal with a jackknife knows why this tool exists. The nose is blunt and rounded so it slides between the bandage and the skin, and the cutting edge sits recessed inside the hook, so the blade never faces the animal. You lift, slide, pull, and the wrap opens up. It handles what actually gets used on a farm: elastic wrap, cotton gauze, vet tape, and duct tape over top of all of it. Thick layered hoof bandages take a second pass rather than one heroic pull, and going slow there is the point. On a hind leg or a sore foot the animal is going to move, and the blunt nose is what keeps that movement from turning into a cut. The body is moulded plastic, so it is light, it does not rust, and at this price it is reasonable to keep one in the calving kit, one in the horse trailer and one in the treatment room instead of hunting for the only one you own. The blade is not replaceable. When it stops parting tape on the first pull, replace the tool. A dull cutter makes you use force, and force is what causes the injury you bought this to avoid.
