This is the awkward but useful combination: the fine bore of a 20 gauge on the longer inch-and-a-half shaft. You want it when a label calls for intramuscular into a mature animal but the volume is small enough that a heavier needle would do more damage than the injection warrants. Length matters more than people think. Too short and an intramuscular dose ends up in fat or under the skin, where absorption is different and the label no longer describes what is happening. Inch and a half gets through hide and fat into muscle on grown cattle and horses. The trade-off is that a long fine needle is the easiest one in the box to bend. Restrain the animal properly, go in with one committed motion rather than a poke, and if a needle comes out bent, throw it away instead of straightening it. Broken needles in muscle are the reason this matters. Aluminum hubs take heat, so these clean and sterilise rather than going in the bin after one use, and 25 to a box is enough to change needles as often as you should. Which product, which route, which site and how much are all label or veterinary decisions. Sharps go in a sharps container.
