Details
Printed Z1 calf tags arrive with the numbers already on them, which takes an evening of writing out of calving prep. The printing is done into the tag rather than sitting on the surface, so it does not wear off the way a marker can once a calf starts rubbing on a feeder. The numbers are large and dark against the tag colour with a long neck below them, which is what makes a tag readable from a distance or at an angle. At the chute you load the tag on the pin, set it in the middle third of the ear between the cartilage ribs, and squeeze once. The one-piece design is the reason these have stayed popular. There is no rivet or back button to line up, and nothing protruding behind the ear to catch on wire, brush or a bale feeder. The self-piercing tip makes a small clean incision that heals in around the stem. Use them for herd management and visual identification. They are not a replacement for an approved CCIA tag.
