Details
A mare produces an appeasing substance that settles a foal, and this is a synthetic analogue of it delivered as a gel. It is a pheromone product rather than a sedative, so it is used where you want a horse to cope with something unfamiliar while still being fully awake and working with you. Each sachet is a single 5 ml dose, wiped inside the nostrils roughly fifteen to thirty minutes before the event. Ten doses in a box is a sensible amount for a season of one-off situations rather than daily use. The practical list is long on most places: a colt's first few trailer rides, clipping, the farrier on a horse that has had a bad experience, a vet visit, moving to a new barn, or a young horse asked to stand tied at a busy grounds for the first time. None of it replaces putting the miles in and handling the horse properly, but there are days when hauling has to happen and the horse has not had those miles yet. Keep a couple of sachets in the trailer tack compartment.
