Hens bill feed out of an open trough onto the litter, where it goes damp, gets fouled and ends up feeding the mice and the sparrows instead of the flock. Across a winter that adds up to real money in a small barn. This is a kit rather than a finished feeder, and that turns out to be the useful part. You get three feeder ports and the hole saw bit to cut for them, and you fit them to whatever plastic container suits you — a five-gallon pail, a tote, a barrel. Feed gravity-feeds down to the ports, and because the bird puts its head inside to eat, what it flicks about lands back in the feeder rather than on the floor. Capacity is whatever you build it into, which is rather the point: size the container to how often you want to be filling it. The maker rates the ports as weatherproof, so a properly lidded container works out in a run as well as inside a coop. Keeping feed off the ground is the practical rodent control here, since less spill means less to draw them in. Cut the ports at a height your birds can reach comfortably and check the assembly guide for spacing before you commit the hole saw to a good bucket.
