A ewe with triplets, or a ewe that dies lambing, leaves you needing a bottle within the hour rather than the next day. These thread straight onto a standard soft-drink bottle, which means the emergency kit is a couple of teats in a drawer instead of a shelf of dedicated gear. The teat is soft pliable latex rather than moulded rubber, and that matters for a weak lamb with not much suck in it yet. Inside sits a small metal ball working as a one-way vent — you can hear it rattle when you shake the teat. It is also the part that goes missing, and a teat that suddenly leaks has usually lost its ball. They fit wide-mouth and standard lamb and kid bottles as well as pop bottles. They arrive closed, with no hole in them. Rather than snipping the tip off, slit the end lengthwise into two halves with a razor blade. The halves spring back together between feeds and seal the teat, so a bottle set down does not empty itself across the straw. Wash in warm water only. Boiling water and bleach both wreck the latex, do not microwave a bottle with the teat still fitted, and keep them out of long sun exposure, which softens them badly. Buy more than you think you need; they are cheap and they wander.
