Shoulder-length disposable obstetrical gloves in a 32 micron film, ten to a pack, so there is always a clean arm ready at calving time.
Details
Going in bare-armed is how a uterine infection travels from one cow to the next, and how a scratch on your forearm turns into something you are still nursing a week later. A disposable sleeve costs almost nothing and is the simplest barrier in the calving kit. These run the full length of the arm, roughly thirty-four inches to the shoulder, in a polyethylene film of 32 microns — about 1.25 mil. They are cut as a five-finger sanitary glove with sewn seams, and the cuff carries a quarter-inch overlapped lip that gives you something to grab, so they go on quickly with one hand. One size, ten to a pack. Thin film is a hygiene barrier, not armour. Use plenty of lubricant, and treat a glove as a single-use item. If it tears part way through a job, change it rather than carry on. Many people tape or band the top, or run a shoulder strap, to stop the glove sliding down mid-job. Ten to a pack is a season for a handful of cows and a single rough night in a bad spring, so buy accordingly rather than running down to one.
