Mosquito Barrier is a liquid mosquito and tick repellent made from garlic juice, registered by Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency as a Domestic-class product under PCP Reg. No. 31022 (registrant Upper Canada Organic Products, Inc.). The guarantee on the label is garlic juice 99.3%, with 0.2% potassium sorbate as a preservative. This is the concentrate: it is mixed with water before spraying. Package size: 3.79 L (128 oz). U C Organic Products, the Canadian distributor, lists coverage of up to 8,000 m² for the 3.79 L concentrate. What it is for, in the label's words: "Repels mosquitoes and ticks. Mosquito Barrier is a concentrated garlic juice solution that is sprayed on plants, shrubs, and turf to repel mosquitoes and ticks. Odourless in hours." The label explains how it works: "Mosquitoes and ticks are repelled by the odour of Mosquito Barrier almost immediately after spraying." It is a repellent sprayed on vegetation, not a personal repellent for skin. Directions from the label: "Shake well before using. Mix Mosquito Barrier in water at the rate of 30 mL/L." The label adds that if mosquitoes and ticks are already present it may be beneficial to double the amount per litre of water; that up to 5 mL of mild liquid soap (not detergent) per litre may be added to aid mixing, especially in hard water; and that a sticker of up to 20 mL of canola or corn oil (not soybean or peanut oil) with up to 5 mL of mild liquid soap per litre may be added. "For best results spray in early morning or early evening. Avoid spraying in the heat of the day. Spray all foliage with a small spray droplet size until run-off." Use it in areas that attract mosquitoes and ticks, which the label lists as grass, plants, shrubs and under decks and porches. "Re-apply after heavy rain or if mosquitoes and ticks continue to be a problem. Spraying for tick nymphs should start in late spring or early summer." Test on a small area if in doubt about the sensitivity of a particular plant. Precautions quoted from the label: "KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN" and "Do not swallow. Avoid getting on skin and in eyes. May cause skin and eye irritation. Avoid inhaling/breathing mist or vapours. Potential skin sensitizer. Apply only when the potential for drift is minimal." Individuals who are sensitive or allergic to garlic should avoid handling Mosquito Barrier and should avoid treated areas until dry or after a heavy rain. "Do not spray on Blue Spruce trees." "DO NOT contaminate irrigation or drinking water supplies or aquatic habitats by cleaning of equipment or disposal of wastes."
