A fluid feeder is calving barn equipment. Two quarts, a heavy-duty tube built to resist punctures and tears, and a bottle that collapses without venting thanks to a check valve. The crimp valve on the tube regulates how fast the fluid runs, and Magrath sets that rate deliberately slow so the calf forms saliva as it goes. The probe is 24 inches of flexible plastic, shaped and sized so it will not enter the trachea, and the plastic resists the burs a damaged probe can develop. The tube stays flexible down to about minus eighteen Celsius, which is not an idle claim in a calving barn in March. One person can manage the whole job with it. This is a tool, not a procedure. Tubing a calf badly is a serious matter, and how it is done, when it is warranted and what goes in the bottle are all questions for your veterinarian. Get shown properly well before you need it, not at two in the morning with a cold calf. Bottle, tube and probe all come apart for cleaning, and all of it should be washed and dried after every use.
