Sled teams, hunting dogs, stock dogs through calving, and any dog that visibly drops weight over its working season — this is the formula in the Tuffy's Gold dry line built to carry that load. It runs considerably higher on protein and fat than the Maintenance recipe does. Chicken by-product meal is the first ingredient, with dried egg product and fish meal further along, over whole grain ground corn and whole grain ground wheat. Beet pulp, flax seeds, brewers yeast and yeast culture are in the mix, the minerals are chelated forms, and the fat is preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid. A high-energy food fed to a dog that is not working will put weight on it, which is the usual reason people move between the Gold formulas across the year instead of staying on one. Feeding amounts are printed on the bag, and how much your dog needs at any point in its season is a question for your veterinarian. The bag holds 18.1 kg (40 lb). Higher-fat foods go stale faster than lean ones, so keep it sealed and out of the sun, and do not leave the scoop buried in the bin where it collects moisture off the food.
