A quarter inch bore with a half inch outside diameter works out to an eighth of an inch of wall all the way around. That is a heavy wall for a tube this size, and it is the reason it holds its shape: a thin-walled tube of the same bore collapses when an animal clamps down on it or when you pull suction, and a collapsed tube is no use to anyone. The narrower bore suits smaller animals and thinner fluids. Ten feet gives you working length to spare. Most people cut a piece to suit their own setup and keep the rest of the coil for when the first one gets chewed, kinked or contaminated, which it eventually will. Passing a tube is a skill, not a purchase. Knowing you are in the right place before anything goes down it is the entire job, and getting it wrong is serious. If you have not been shown properly, have your veterinarian walk you through it on a quiet animal before you need it at midnight. Wash the tube through and hang it to dry after every use rather than coiling it wet, and store it out of the sun so it stays flexible.
