Hempseed Shine 11 lb
Hemp seed coat and condition supplement, 11 lb — a whole-food source of omega fatty acids fed as a topdress.
Details
Hemp seed is one of the better natural sources of omega fatty acids for horses, and unlike most oils it comes with the protein and fibre of the whole seed attached. What makes it interesting nutritionally is the ratio: hemp is unusually well balanced between omega-6 and omega-3 compared with the corn and soy oils that dominate most feeds, and the fat is highly digestible. Fed consistently, it is a legitimate way to support coat quality, skin condition and general bloom. The honest part is the timing. Coat and hoof are grown, not painted on, so a fat supplement takes weeks to show. Expect to feed it for a good six to eight weeks before judging whether it is doing anything, and give it a fair trial rather than switching after two. An 11 lb bag is sized to allow that — long enough to actually see a result at typical topdress rates. It is a fat supplement, not a fix for a dull coat with another cause. Worms, poor teeth, a marginal ration, ulcers, and skin disease all show up in the coat, and none of them respond to added oil. If a horse looks rough, get the basic things ruled out before you spend on a supplement. Two practical notes. Fats go rancid, especially once a bag is opened in summer heat — keep it sealed, cool and out of the sun, and buy a size you will finish rather than the biggest available. And if you compete under rules that test, check hemp-derived feeds against your organization's current medication and substance rules before you feed them; the rules on hemp products have moved around and vary between bodies.
