Witch hazel is one of those plain old products that stays in the grooming box because it keeps proving useful. This one is a 500 ml bottle at 14% alcohol. Two jobs account for most of its use. The first is cleaning: wiped over a coat with a cloth after a workout, it lifts grime and dried sweat without a full bath, which matters in a climate where a wash rack is realistic for about four months of the year. The second is on legs after exercise, where the astringent action constricts blood vessels and helps draw heat and puffiness out. Apply it with a cloth or sponge rather than pouring it on. Keep it away from eyes and off open cuts and abrasions; alcohol on broken skin is unpleasant for the horse and works against you. If a leg is hot, swollen and painful, or the horse is lame on it, witch hazel is the wrong tool and your veterinarian is the right one. Keep the bottle capped so the alcohol does not evaporate off over a season, and store it somewhere it will not freeze in an unheated tack room.
