Details
A sorting paddle works because cattle read it as a wall, not because you hit anything with it. The wide bright face fills the space between you and the animal and gives it somewhere else to go. At 49 inches this is the long version, which matters when you are working off the outside of an alley or reaching across a gate without stepping into a spot you would rather not be standing in. Bright red shows up well against mud, wet hair and the general brown of a corral in March. Most handlers keep one hanging by the tub and another in the truck, because the one you want is always at the other yard. Care is close to nothing. Rinse the manure off, do not leave it lying where a tractor tire will find it, and check that the grip is still solid before a big run. A paddle stored in a heated shop stays flexible instead of going brittle in a cold snap. If the face picks up a crack, retire it and get another one rather than letting it fail partway through a load out.
