Lice are a winter problem, and on the prairies they are a predictable one. Cattle come in off grass, go onto feed in close quarters with long hair coats, and by January you are looking at rubbed-out patches, damaged hides, and animals spending energy scratching instead of gaining. Heavy burdens cost gain and can push a marginal animal into anaemia. A pour-on is the practical answer in cold weather because there is nothing to mix and no wet animals afterwards — you run them through the chute and apply a measured stripe down the back. The 4 L jug is a herd-sized quantity. Use a proper metered applicator gun rather than eyeballing it out of a jug; dose is by weight, and both underdosing and overdosing are easy to do by hand. Apply along the topline as the label directs, in a continuous line rather than a puddle behind the shoulders. Read the label for the active ingredient, the species and classes it covers, the withdrawal intervals for meat and milk, and the minimum interval between treatments. Those numbers are not interchangeable between products that look similar on the shelf, and withdrawal is not something to estimate. If you have dairy animals, or you are treating close to shipping, check before you open the jug. Two operational notes. Timing matters more than product choice for biting versus sucking lice, and one treatment often will not clear a heavy infestation — the label will tell you whether and when to repeat. And check whether the product also controls the parasites you assumed it did; not every pour-on covers both lice and internal worms. Store above freezing, wear the protective equipment the label specifies, and keep it away from water bodies.
