Every operation that calves has had the calf that comes out alive and does not breathe. What you do in the first two or three minutes decides the outcome, and the honest truth is that most of the traditional tricks — swinging the calf, hanging it over a gate, cold water in the ear — either do very little or actively make things worse. Hanging a calf upside down pushes the abdominal organs against the diaphragm and makes it harder to inflate the lungs, and the fluid that drains out is mostly stomach content, not lung fluid. A proper resuscitator does the thing that actually matters: it seals over the muzzle and lets you push air into the lungs at a controlled rate. The mask design keeps the airway sealed so pressure goes where you want it instead of leaking out the sides, and the manual pump gives you feel for how much you are delivering. Clear the mouth and nostrils of mucus first, extend the head and neck so the airway is straight, then work in a steady rhythm and watch the chest rise. If the chest is not rising, something is blocking the airway or your seal is poor — pushing harder is not the answer. It is a piece of equipment worth having before you need it, and worth having your veterinarian show you on a quiet day. Two minutes of practice on a live healthy calf teaches more than reading about it. Rinse and disinfect the mask and hose after every use and let it dry completely before it goes back in the kit. Check the valves and seals at the start of each calving season — a resuscitator that leaks is worse than useless because you will not find out until it matters.
