A bull lead is one of those things you do not need often, and then you need it badly. The lead grips across the nasal septum, the chain gives you length to work with, and between the two you have real control over an animal that outweighs you many times over. Most outfits keep one hanging in the barn or riding in the truck with the halters. Handling still comes first. A lead works best on an animal already contained in a chute, headgate or well built alley, with a second person nearby and a way out planned. As a steering aid on a caught animal it is a good tool. As a way to win an argument in the open with a mature bull, it is not. Rinse it after use, dry it, and give the chain and the hinge a wipe of light oil now and then. Barn air and manure are hard on plated steel, and a lead left wet in a bucket all winter will be stiff and rough the next time you reach for it. Check the swivel and the chain links for wear before every use.
