DURATRAN vs DURATRAN XL: Which Petro-Canada Tractor Fluid Fits Your Tractor?

DURATRAN or DURATRAN XL Synthetic Blend? The John Deere, Kubota and other specifications Petro-Canada lists for each, and what it says about cold weather.

Short answer: Petro-Canada lists standard DURATRAN against the John Deere JDM J20C and Kubota UDT specifications, and DURATRAN XL Synthetic Blend against JDM J20D and Kubota Super UDT2. It also lists DURATRAN XL as performing "at temperatures below -40°C/-40°F". Your operator's manual names the fluid specification your tractor needs: find that specification first, then pick the DURATRAN that lists it.

What are DURATRAN and DURATRAN XL?

Both are Petro-Canada Lubricants tractor transmission and hydraulic fluids, made for tractors and equipment that run the transmission, hydraulics and related systems from one shared oil supply. Petro-Canada lists both for John Deere, CNH (Case IH, J.I. Case, New Holland), Massey-Ferguson, Kubota, White Farm (Oliver), AGCO Deutz Allis, Steiger, Versatile, Landini and Hesston Fiat equipment.

DURATRAN XL Synthetic Blend is the synthetic-blend member of the same family. Petro-Canada also makes a full-synthetic DURATRAN Synthetic, which we do not list.

Neither one is an engine oil. Petro-Canada's DURATRAN approval list notes, against the Massey-Ferguson M-1145 specification: "For UTTO applications only. Do not use in STOU engine applications."

John Deere J20C or J20D?

This is the clearest difference between the two fluids on Petro-Canada's product pages:

  • DURATRAN: "Surpasses John Deere OEM viscosity specification JDM J20C"
  • DURATRAN XL Synthetic Blend: "Surpasses John Deere OEM viscosity specification JDM J20D"

If your John Deere manual calls for J20C, standard DURATRAN is the one that lists it. If it calls for J20D, DURATRAN XL is the one that lists it.

Kubota UDT or Super UDT2?

  • DURATRAN lists Kubota UDT.
  • DURATRAN XL Synthetic Blend lists Kubota Super UDT2.

Which other specifications do both list?

Petro-Canada lists both fluids as suitable where these are called for: AGCO Power Fluid 821XL, CNH MAT 3505, CNH MAT 3506, CNH MAT 3525, Massey-Ferguson CMS M1141, API GL-4, Caterpillar TO-2, and Allison C-3 and C-4.

Standard DURATRAN's list also includes CNH MAT 3540, Massey-Ferguson CMS M1145 (UTTO applications only, as above), ZF TE-ML 03E, 05F, 06K and 21F (axles), and an approval for Volvo WB 101. Those are not on the DURATRAN XL list, so if your manual names one of them, standard DURATRAN is the one that lists it.

Cold weather and drain intervals: what does Petro-Canada say?

For standard DURATRAN, Petro-Canada's product page says it "Extends drain intervals and performs well in the most extreme summer environments" and lists it as "Best suited for agricultural summer applications for various OEM farm equipment".

For DURATRAN XL Synthetic Blend, it lists "Performs at temperatures below -40°C/-40°F" and "Extends drain intervals, reducing the need for shorter seasonal change-out".

How often to change the fluid, and how much your machine holds, come from your operator's manual.

DURATRAN sizes we carry

All three are in our Oil and Lubricants category, alongside the rest of the Petro-Canada range we list.

Before you buy

Check the fluid specification in your operator's manual (or ask your equipment dealer) and match it to the lists above. Petro-Canada publishes the safety data sheet for each fluid on its SDS page. If you are not sure which one fits your machine, ask us in store with the make, model and the specification your manual gives.
